Hill Country School of Leadership

2012 Spring Trimester – March 27 thru May 22

The Purpose Behind Hill Country School of Leadership

Hill Country School of Leadership was born out of seeing the need to prepare leaders for tomorrow’s church and affect generations for the King of Kings. Our objective is to not only equip present and future leaders for the work of the ministry, but to build passionate followers of Jesus who will be an example to the world around them. As we live in times of uncertainty and the foundations and institutions of man are being shaken to the core, there remains one Kingdom that cannot be shaken, and our purpose is to train uncommon leaders who will bear witness to generations about that Kingdom!

Course Descriptions

Church History – Modern Day Revivals

20th Century Restoration of Pentecostal Power to the Church.  For almost 1900 years the power experience of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, accompanied by speaking in tongues and other gifts, was lost to the church. We will study the outpouring of Pentecost at the beginning of the 20th century, the famous Los Angeles Azusa Street Revival, the world-wide Pentecostal mission movement, and early Pentecostal evangelists. Also, we will look at the development of Pentecostal denominations, the 1948 world-wide tent healing revivals, the Jesus Movement, the Charismatic Renewal, and subsequent revivals and waves of outpouring. Be ready for a fascinating study.

Understanding the Times – Worldview & Apologetics

These classes will look at the major worldviews that drive people’s thinking and examine ways to give a defense of the gospel and answers for life’s tough issues. We will look at the 7 most common objections to Christianity and learn to give reasoned, rational responses to some of our culture’s most volatile issues – Intelligent Design, gay marriage, abortion, etc.

2012 Spring Trimester Teachers

Tom Ray

Tom and Cathy Ray have been married and in the ministry since 1981. Tom gave his life to the Lord while a student at Southwest Texas State University and Cathy was part of the Jesus Movement and Charismatic Renewal that swept through San Marcos High School in the seventies and helped birth Hill Country Church. Tom went on to graduate from SWTSU and Hill Country Bible College and Cathy graduated from Oral Roberts University. Fresh out of Bible College and newly married, the Rays moved to Telluride, CO, where they pastored for 17 years. In 1998, after the births of their 4 children and many years in a mountain community, they moved back to San Marcos to help pastor their old home church – Hill Country.  Now, thirteen years later, the Lord is transitioning the Ray’s ministry to help train the next generation of Godly leaders for tomorrow’s church.

Jim Darnell

Long time San Marcos resident, Jim Darnell, has served many years as a pastor and taught the Word in four Bible Colleges.  He has ministered as a teacher, church planter, news columnist, conference speaker, and host of a weekly TV show heard across the south called “God’s Great Outdoors”.  He has also served as President of the Liberty Fellowship of Churches (a southeastern US association of churches).  Jim graduated with a Bachelors Degree from Lamar University and then earned a Theology Degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and has a Masters Degree from Texas State University.  He has been married to his wife Beth for 50 years.  The Darnells have three children of which his two sons are both pastors.
